4th Grade Social Studies Vocabulary Week of Jan. 31-Feb. 11

  1. Compromise: The settlement of an argument by agreeing that each side will give up part of their request.
  2. Colony: A settlement of people who have left one country to live in another.
  3. Invasion:  When a group or army enters into a place with the plans to take it over.
  4. Prairie: Flat or rolling land covered with grass that has little or no trees.
  5. Helmet:  A covering for the head often worn for protection.
  6. Country:  An area of land large or small that has many boundaries and a government shared by all the people.  
  7. Ocean:  The whole body of salt water that covers most of the earth’s surface.  
  8. Plantation:  A large farm that produces crops to sell.
  9. Debt:  Money that is owed to others.
  10. Dispute:  When to or more groups argue and disagree.

  1. Revolution: an organized fight against the government.
  2. Ancestor: A relative from the past that a family came from.
  3. Tradition: A way of doing something that is handed down from older groups to younger groups.
  4. Contribution: anything that is given or contributed to a group, person, or cause. Example money, food, or language.
  5. Celebration: a party, festival or social gathering of people to celebrate for a specific reason.
  6. Holiday: is a day chosen by the government to recognize a person, religious belief or special occasion.
  7. Heritage: the shared history of a group.
  8. Religion: A belief in the worship of a God, gods or object, and the rules they follow.
  9.  Geography: is the study of the earth and its land.

10.  Population: The total number of people living in a given area.

  1. Anarchy:  When a country that has been involved in war and the government was destroyed.
  2. Invention: a newly created item or product.
  3. Monarchy: The King and Queen have absolute power and control that is passed through the family.
  4. Republic: when a group or country is led by people who voters have chosen.
  5. Currency: the type of money used in a country.
  6. Vote: to make a choice that is counted.
  7. Right: a freedom that belongs to citizens of the United States.
  8. Escape: to break away from capture or enslavement.
  9. Confederacy: several groups of people who agree to work together for a common goal. 
  10. Ethnic group: a group of people who may share things in common, such as language, religious beliefs, customs and other ways of life.

Current Week:

Greetings  Odyssey Family, We are enjoying another week here at Odyssey. It is now getting down to the wire. Please encourage your child to complete and turn in all assigments. It is also very important that your child attend school everyday. There attendance may in some cases have an effect on their classroom grade. This week in Social Studies we will be learning all about inventions and important inventers in history. The students will be creating a scientific inventions book with a partner.  REMINDER: The Celebrating Our Leaders Project was due Monday May 23rd. Please make sure your child completed this project.

Dear Parents,

                        Your fourth grader has learned a lot this year but it is not over yet. There are still many more lessons to be taught. For the rest of the month in Social Studies your child will be learning about effective leaders and individuals who have impacted history.  Your child was assigned a project entitled Celebrating Our Leaders on May 2nd.  They must research information on this important historical figure and complete the project requirements. I have included the requirements with this letter.

This important project will count as 3 major grades toward your child’s end of the year Social Studies report card average. It is extremely important that your child work hard to make the best use of their time and complete this project effectively and successfully. There are many resources that may help your child with this project including the local library, the school library, and the internet. Celebrating Our Leaders Project

4th Grade Social Studies

Deadline May 23, 2011

 

Purpose:

The students will gather facts and conduct research on the outstanding citizen and leader listed above. Students will recognize the contributions of a past or present leader. Students will understand the impact these leaders have had on the community including; our city, state or country. Students will gain knowledge of their major accomplishments, achievements and list their leadership qualities.

Requirements:

  1. Write a 1 ½ to 2 page essay on the life of an outstanding leader. This should include the Early Life or Childhood, Education, Major Events in their life history, and Accomplishments. Students may choose to type their essay instead of hand writing it.
  2. Create a Timeline detailing at least 8 important events.
  3. Design a poster board that outlines the life of the person with pictures, drawing and artwork.
  4. Prepare and present a 3 -5 minute presentation about the person, their leadership qualities, and the major role they played in history.
  5.  Students will explain the impact they believe the person had on the world.
  6. Students must list the resources used for information to complete this project. Example resources include (library books list author and title, internet list web address, dictionary or encyclopedia list name, year and publishing company).
  7. Projects will not be accepted before Thursday, May 19.

Alamo Project

  • Write an essay about the Battle of the Alamo.
  • Paper must include 2-3 paragraphs
  • Summarize the events that took place before, during and after the battle.
  • Describe why the battle of the Alamo is important to our Texas history.
  • Create a portrait/drawing that represents the Battle of the Alamo and what Texas was fighting for. (Many students have already begun this part in class.)

This assignment is a major assessment grade and must be turned by all students.

Survival Skills

Native Americans developed many skills for survival. As a review over the information we discussed in class including adaptations, modifications, and consequences complete the activities below.

Part#1: Choose 1 situation from below circle your choice and write 1 or more examples of the Adaptations, Modifications, and the Consequences. Draw a picture to represent each of the 3 things.

 

Possible Situations: Bad Soil, Surrounded by water, Limited food, Nowhere to live.

 

 

Part# 2: Make a list of survival skills that may have been used for the example you chose.

 

 

Part# 3 In 3 or more sentences explain how each of the skills was used for survival by Native American Tribes.

Practice your map skills. Create a map of your home, school or neighborhood.

 

 Use symbols; identify streets, signs and landmarks. Include roads and any routes that you most commonly travel.

 

Label streets and any highways you use. Create a map key, and compass rose to show direction. 

 

Write a paragraph that describes the map of your neighborhood.

Living Off The Land

Identify what you know about the relationships between where people live and how they live.

 

Example: Life in the Mountains or cold weather.

 

Explain how the physical characteristics such as soil, landforms, climate, bodies of water and vegetation played a major role in the lives of early Native American settlers of our state. How did they adapted to their environment?

 

Compare the way they lived then with the way we live today. Identify the similarities and differences you see.

 

List those differences and draw out 2 examples.

Native American Tribes of Texas

You have been learning about the Native American tribes of Texas. Remember what Native American cultures and tribes you have studied in class Caddos, Jumanos, Apache, and Karankawa. Each of the tribes are unique and lived life in a different way. Choose a tribe and give examples of their way of life. This includes customs, traditions, clothing, food, and shelter. 

You may want to use magazine images such as National Geographic, photos from newspapers, other newsmagazines and/or drawings.

Identify what you know about the relationships between where people live and how they live.

What’s going on in the world?

 

Watch the news on television, review the news online or read the newspaper with a parent. Make a list of some of the topics you discovered. Examples may include human interest stories, weather stories about hurricanes or storms, government elections, community news and events from other countries around the world. Choose one that interests you the most.

 

Write a paragraph that answers the following questions. You may include pictures, cut outs or drawings.

 

1. Why is this information in the news?

2. Who was affected by what happen?

3. How does this affect our local community?  4. How does it affect our world?

5. What do think about it and how would you handle it.
