Unit 1: Analyzing Fiction & Drama

Duration 5-6 Weeks

Lesson 1: Exploring Short Fiction

Students read and analyze short fictional texts, including those with linear plot structures and different forms of point of view. Students make personal and world connections and use writing to communicate their thoughts about text(s). Students engage in the writing process as they begin to build portfolios of different types of writing. They begin writing by generating ideas for imaginative stories. Students establish word collections routines in order to support understanding or word knowledge.

Lesson 2: Exploring Drama

Students read and analyze drama with a focus on how playwrights characterize their protagonists and antagonists through dialogue and staging. Students maintain a Vocabulary Notebook that demonstrates knowledge of new words, a Reader’s Notebook that includes connections, thoughts, and responses to texts, and a Writer’s Notebook that demonstrates fluency and voice and records notes and practice of conventions. Students prepare for the performance indicator to write an imaginative story, specifically focusing on using conventions to enhance their writing.

Lesson 3: Exploring the Novel

Students read and analyze a novel with a focus on linear plot structures and the central characters’ influence on the theme. Students continue to maintain a Vocabulary Notebook that demonstrates knowledge of new words, a Reader’s Notebook that includes connections, thoughts, and responses to texts, and a Writer’s Notebook that demonstrates fluency and voice and records notes and practice of conventions.
